The JV football Firebirds won the conference championship Thursday night, defeating the Hunt Warriors 32-22. The Birds offense was led yet again by the running of Jordan Vick. Vick scored three of the Birds five touchdowns. Quarterback Brock Alford snuck his way into the end zone twice. Kaden Ricks Tucker converted the only 2-point conversion of the night for Southern as the other four were unsuccessful.

The first quarter was slow-paced as Vick scored his first touchdown of the game with 4:10 in the first quarter. Hunt threw a touchdown on 4th and long as the clock hit zero off a busted coverage by the Birds.

The pace quickened in the second quarter as the Birds and Warriors combined for four scores in the final 5:59 of the half. Brock Alford scored both his touchdowns during the scoring frenzy. After Alford’s first TD, the Warriors returned the ensuing kickoff for 6 and converted their 2-point try to make it 14-12 in their favor. Jordan Vick obviously was not a fan of trailing, as he made multiple Warriors miss for one of his most impressive TD jaunts of the season. Ricks Tucker followed Vicks score with the Birds only successful 2-point try of the season, putting the Birds back ahead 20-14. Alford’s second TD run came with :30 seconds left in the half and the Birds D was able to hold off the Warriors. The Firebirds led 26-14 at half.

Only two scores occurred in the second half; one Vick TD sprint and one Warriors run. Vick’s 3rd TD run with 5:58 remaining in the 4th quarter put the Birds ahead 32-14. The Warriors scored with 2:59 left in the 3rd but that was all they could muster. The Southern Nash defense held tight in the 4th quarter, sealing the win. The Birds OL paved the way for Vick and Ricks Tucker on the final drive to allow Alford to kneel twice and end the game. The final score was 32-22 in the Birds favor.

Isaac Joyner continued his dominant play on defense, fighting through pain to lead the Birds D. Joyner made an insane interception, nimbly sliding down to snag a deflected throw. Xavier Horton controlled the interior, making numerous plays as well.

The offensive line played tremendously yet again, bullishly opening up holes all night.

The win boosts the JV’s record to 4-1 on the year, and a perfect 3-0 in conference play. The conference champions play at South Granville next Wednesday night at 6:00. Thank you for your continued support.
